The boat ride through Cape Cod Bay had been relatively calm, however the wind began picking up as I began to set lines off the stern. We were fishing for giant bluefin tuna-a fish that can grow to 12 feet in length and weigh over 1,400 pounds.
15 minutes after setting the first line an enormous gaping hole opened up in the ocean. Suddenly the largest fish I have ever seen came hurdling towards the surface, smacking the bait with tremendous force. The port side fishing rod bent in half and line began screaming from the reel. Fish on!
After a tremendous 3 hour long battle we had the giant tuna just yards from the boat. My friend reared back and launched a harpoon into the side of the fish. We quickly tail wrapped the behemoth bluefin and sat there in utter disbelief-basically in a state of absolute shock.
With the tuna in tow we made the 5 hour trek back towards Plymouth Harbor. Even after being gutted the fish tipped the scaled at a whopping 673 pounds! With guts intact she would have easily weighed 700.
By now you may be asking yourself “Why in the world is this guy telling me this story?” Well I did not realize it at the time but I had just launched my writing, blogging and SEO career.
Fast forward 1.5 years and that tuna has turned into a fishing membership site averaging 150 – 200 unique visitors day. My Fishing Cape Cod is making money each and every day (even while I sleep!) and is on the 1st page of Google for various fishing related search terms.
Without even realizing it my passion for fishing has turned into a profitable source of passive income. Decades of fishing experiences provide me with an endless stream of fresh content, articles, videos and blog posts.
So my question to you is this; “what passion of yours can you turn into a profitable passive stream of income?”
Do What You Love and the Money Will Come
In my opinion, if you are going to devote countless hours of your life to developing a passive stream of income, you might as well choose something you love to do. It doesn’t matter if it’s fishing or button collecting – but it does matter if you enjoy doing it.
In today’s online environment there is basically an audience for every niche, no matter how obscure you believe your interests may be. I didn’t realize it when I began, but there are thousands upon thousands of people who enjoy reading about giant tuna. I’d be willing to bet that there are also thousands of people who are interested in square dancing, stamp collecting, meatball subs (I’m eating one as I write this) and anything else that may be your passion.
The old adage “Do what you love and the money will come” still rings true today. The big question looming over the horizon is exactly when that money will come and how much it will be. While I can’t answer those two questions for you, I can assure that you if stick to it the money will, at some point in time, begin flowing to you.
Passions and Search Engine Optimization
If you are familiar with SEO, then you have most likely heard of article writing. Article writing is at the core of many successful SEO campaigns, and it is absolutely at the core of my SEO campaigns.
Most folks who are just starting out do not have the funds to hire a copywriter or virtual assistant. What this boils down to is that you are going to be doing the vast majority of the article writing. Take it from me, it is incredibly important that you choose a topic you have some interest in, because you may very well end up writing hundreds of articles about that topic.
Over the past year I have probably written and published over 200 fishing related articles. That is a pretty good chunk of content and time. I can’t imagine writing that much content for a blog about personal finances, dating or how to lose weight.
Sure finance, dating and losing weight are profitable niches. However they’re just not my thing and the interest just isn’t there.
Monetizing Your Passion
Have you ever had someone ask you to buy something, and you can tell right off the bat that the only reason they are asking you to make a purchase is because it’s their job?
Maybe you have been (or currently are) that person. Bascially you are out there every day, pounding the pavement trying to scratch up a few sales, solely because it is your job. Your boss told you to go do it so you did.
The #1 factor in sealing the sale is often the energy and passion of the salesperson. If you are trying to sell insurance, but you hate insurance, then you are most likely not going to sell many insurance policies. On the other hand, if you love insurance, think about insurance all day long, and are just dying to talk to anyone about insurance, then you stand a much better chance of making a sale.
Even in the online world people can tell if your heart is in it. Your copywright and content will provide cues to how much you love (or despise) what you are writing about.
If you want to sell eBooks, online courses and advertising space then your content must “ooze” passion. Your writing must convey your love of the topic. Content that is soaked to the bone in passion sells. Everything else doesn’t.
The next time you find yourself wrapped up in something you love to do, consider taking that something a bit further. Start a blog, write an eBook and start bouncing some ideas around.
You just never know what a 700 pound giant tuna, a game of badminton or any other passion may turn into!
